This body of work was created during La Fragua residency in a small village in Spain, surrounded by a castle and a tower. Immersed in the outdoors, I engaged directly with the environment, simplifying my process by using only black and white to explore shape and scale within the space. During this same residency, I began creating symbols with materials that resonated with the public space, such as the pine cone—a motif addressing growth, combustion, and the historical use of pines in construction, as well as their displacement of native plants.
The pieces are deeply connected to the landscape—trees, rocks, and buildings—and embrace the ephemeral, like temporary tattoos marking moments that fade with time. This work represented a fundamental transition for me as an artist, shedding unnecessary layers to focus on deeper connections with my surroundings. It was a process of grounding myself in a metaphysical sense, anchoring the work in the moment and place where it was created.
The experience was both draining and transformative, requiring me to invest fully in the act of making. These works are a testament to that period of reconnection, engaging with space and material in a way that felt raw, immediate, and profoundly tied to the environment.
